The Culpeper Cheese Company closed at 306 S. Main St. in September 2025 after 20 years downtown. Beer Hound Brewery closed its doors at 201 Waters Place on Feb. 28, 2026, after more than 11 years next to the Culpeper Depot. On paper, that looks like two losses in five months. On the street, both addresses are open again. One has pizza and a Mediterranean pantry. The other has a brewery that also makes deli sandwiches.
That pattern explains most of this year's change in downtown Culpeper. Turnover has been real. La Bee Da Loca at 236 E. Davis St. closed March 22, 2026, after 10 years, and a fire on May 30 shut Zandra's Taqueria. But the closures have mostly freed up rooms rather than emptied them. The buildings hold the downtown dining map in place even as the businesses inside them change.
306 S. Main St.: a phone company, a diner, a cheese shop, and now pizza
The white-painted building at 306 S. Main St. has been through several lives. The Culpeper Star-Exponent reported that before Olive & Stone moved in, it was home to the Culpeper Cheese Company. Before that it was the Culpeper Diner, and before that the phone company.
The new tenant is Olive & Stone: Craft Pizza and Mediterranean Pantry. Devin Bozkaya, a former chef at the Inn at Little Washington, runs it with his wife, Nelda. In a July 9, 2026 segment on WJLA's Good Morning Washington, the station described a July launch with curated pizzas and a market section called The Pantry. The Pantry includes a walk-up window for seasonal ice creams and sorbets.
The menu boards list 12-inch pizzas. The Calabrian Heat is $19, The Sicilian is $22, and the Spicy Spaniard is $23. Salads and sandwiches on house-made focaccia fill out the board. Before you go, a few practical points from the restaurant's own site matter more than the menu:
- Days: open Monday and Thursday through Sunday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday
- Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on open days
- Seating: a small dining room styled as a Mediterranean bistro, first come, first served
A 7:30 close makes this an early-dinner and lunch spot. Plan around that.
201 Waters Place: one brewery out, another in
Beer Hound's closing was a retirement, not a failure. Rappahannock News reported on Feb. 20, 2026 that the owners, including co-owner Shirley Ammon, were retiring. The paper described the brewery as a craft-beer community gathering place.
By summer, the same address had a new brewery. Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. now lists Angry Wife Brewhouse at 201 Waters Place, Suites 101 and 102, as a craft brewery serving deli-style sandwiches. Its own tagline is "Bold beer. Sharp wit. Zero apologies." WJLA described the concept as a New York-style deli paired with local craft beer.
Angry Wife is close to the brewery already on the block. Far Gohn Brewing Company is at 301 S. East St., and the downtown association lists it as a German-themed pub with craft beer and pizza. Downtown has two breweries again within a short walk of the Depot, and each now serves a different kind of food.
302 E. Davis St.: an 1890s building and a plan to rebuild
The third address is still waiting. Zandra's Taqueria sits at the end of East Davis Street beside the Culpeper Depot. A fire broke out upstairs on May 30. InsideNoVA reported that early accounts called the restaurant a total loss and that owner Miguel Pires said at the time that its future was undecided.
Later Star-Exponent coverage had a clearer answer. The owners plan to rebuild the 1890s building, which once housed the James Hotel. The structure was described as unsafe and unoccupiable for now. Culpeper Renaissance lists Zandra's as temporarily closed. The restaurant's website may still show regular hours, so trust the closure notice over that page.
Here are the three addresses side by side:
| Address | Previous occupant | Status as of late September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 306 S. Main St. | Culpeper Cheese Company, closed September 2025 | Olive & Stone: Craft Pizza and Mediterranean Pantry |
| 201 Waters Place | Beer Hound Brewery, closed Feb. 28, 2026 | Angry Wife Brewhouse |
| 302 E. Davis St. | Zandra's Taqueria, fire on May 30, 2026 | Temporarily closed; owners plan to rebuild |
The fall calendar shows the turnover
Downtown's fall events show this year's change better than any directory. Hop N' Hog, the Culpeper Block Party and BBQ Competition, runs Saturday, Oct. 17, from noon to 5 p.m. at 111 Commerce Street. Angry Wife Brewhouse is on its brewery list along with Far Gohn Brewing Company, Old Bust Head Brew Co., Death Ridge Brewery, Iron Pipe Alehouse, Tap 29 and Belmont Farm. Wild Hare Hard Cider and Cider Lab are pouring cider, and A. Smith Bowman and Copper Fox Distillery are pouring bourbon. A brewery that took over a retiring brewery's space is now pouring at downtown's main beer-and-barbecue afternoon in its first fall.
The pitmasters in the People's Choice competition are 2B-Q, The BBQ Lab, Divine Swine, Doveshack's Smoked BBQ, Shawn's Craft Barbecue and Uncle Elder's BBQ. Uncle Elder's has its own downtown restaurant at 129 E. Culpeper Street. There are three ticket levels:
- Backyard Pass, $20: admission and live music, with food and drinks sold separately
- Pitmaster Pass, $60: adds barbecue tastings, People's Choice voting, beer, wine and cider tastings, and a souvenir glass
- Bourbon Boss Pass, $80: everything in the Pitmaster Pass plus bourbon tastings
Children 16 and under get in free. Pets and coolers are not allowed. Tickets are sold online and at Far Gohn Brewing Company and Vinosity. Smiling Politely plays from noon to 1:30 p.m., and Goodtime Alibi plays from 2 to 5.
Oct. 17 is a busy day. The Mountain Run Winery Fall Festival and Craft Fair runs from noon to 7 p.m. that same Saturday at 10753 Mountain Run Lake Road, with food trucks, coffee, baked goods and sweets. The festival closes two hours after Hop N' Hog, so you can do the downtown block party first and drive out to the winery afterward.
Other October dates from the Culpeper Renaissance fall schedule:
- Oct. 3: Haunted Hustle 5K and Spooky Sprint, with costumes encouraged and a free after-party
- Saturdays through October: Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market, 7:30 a.m. to noon at Culpeper Baptist Church, with a Kids Market, Customer Appreciation Day and Trick-or-Treat at the Market during the season
- Oct. 31: Merchant Trick-or-Treating on Davis Street
Restaurant Week moves to November, with a different lineup
Last year's Fall Restaurant Week ran Sept. 29 through Oct. 5, 2025. Fifteen downtown businesses offered specially priced multi-course menus, combos and specials. This year's runs Nov. 2 through 8, about a month later.
The 2025 list is a good record of how much downtown has changed since then. It included Beer Hound Brewery, Zandra's Taqueria and Throwbacks Arcade. Throwback Arcade, the pinball arcade and eatery at 201 S. East St., has since closed on Aug. 23 after its lease was not renewed. So three of last year's 15 participants are not open this fall.
The other 12 from 2025 were Dtom Dtun Noodle, Far Gohn Brewing Company, GalaxTea, Grass Rootes, HFR Contemporary Kitchen & Bar, It's About Thyme, Natraj Indian Cuisine, Piedmont Steakhouse, Pinto Thai Culpeper, Scoop on Davis, Sweet Roux Restaurant & Bar and Uncle Elders BBQ. Culpeper Renaissance says the 2026 lineup and menus are still to come, and its announcement promises limited-time menus, chef specialties and seasonal offerings. Until that list is posted, it is an open question whether Olive & Stone and Angry Wife Brewhouse will join. Angry Wife now operates at 201 Waters Place, which was Beer Hound's address on last year's list.
Morning plans are steadier. WJLA's July segment pointed to Raven's Nest Coffee House for coffee and to Grass Rootes on Davis Street, which keeps adding local specialty foods.
A building's history affects what it becomes next, whether that's a former phone exchange turned pizza bistro or an 1890s hotel waiting to be rebuilt. I pay the same attention to that history when I represent historic homes and country properties across the Piedmont.
